The Doe's Dash

A short 2D platformer game inspired by Frogger (Konami, 1981) and the collective works of French Painter Marie Laurencin (1883 - 1956). This was a solo project where we were assiigned a specific artist and asked to inrepret their art's style and themes into the medium of games. I took Marie's Work to be wistful and sorrowful but with elements of whimsy and a fairy-like charm.

Naturally I had to make it a 2D platformer game to fit the requirements of the project brief, the greater challenge to me I think was adapting the art style. I focused in on some particular works where she depicted deer and selected that as my protagonist, then thought of some natural opponents to use as hazards and obstacles. For this I settled on using hunters, as they seemed a suitable replacement for cars in this scenario, this was also my first time trying out pixel art, and I went through a couple of iterations on each sprite before settling on anything.

The main lessons I learned with this project were how to look at the mechanics of an existing game and replicate them for myself. Another main focus of this project was adapting or creating a theme or concept from visual art, which was much more difficult but the process definitely kindled an increased interest and respect for art.
